A football videoboard is the largest single purchase most athletic programs ever make, and the specification decisions that drive its cost are made before anyone talks price. The right size comes from viewing distance. Pick the seat farthest from where the board will sit, and size so that a spectator there can comfortably read the game clock and see a replay. Undersizing is the most common regret we hear about — a board that looks enormous on the ground reads as small from the top row of the visitor stands.
Our published planning figure is $210 per square foot for a typical outdoor installation. That number alone lets you sanity-check a budget in about thirty seconds: a 27′ × 14′ display is 378 square feet, so roughly $79,000 of display before structure and installation. Our packaged sizes run from a 17′ × 10′ starter at $45,000 through a 50′ × 23′ stadium board at $345,000.
Pixel pitch is the distance between LEDs, measured in millimeters. A P10 panel has ten millimeters between pixels. Tighter pitch means a sharper image up close and a higher cost per square foot.
For outdoor football, P10 is the workhorse. Spectators sit far enough away that a tighter pitch buys you resolution nobody in the stands can resolve, while costing real money. The three 50′ × 25′ stadium boards our founder installed at Coppell ISD, Keller ISD, and Cedar Hill ISD before launching LPCREATIVE are all P10 for exactly that reason. Save the fine pitch for indoor gyms, where the front row is fifteen feet away.
The display is only part of the project. An outdoor board needs a structure engineered for wind load in your county, footings sized for your soil, and enough steel to hold a large sail-shaped object steady through a Tennessee spring storm. It also needs power and data run to wherever it sits, which is where budgets tend to move unexpectedly — a board 400 feet from the nearest suitable service costs more than the same board 40 feet away.
Outdoor displays are rated to IP65 for weather resistance and run at brightness levels that stay legible in direct afternoon sun. Both matter more in practice than the spec sheet suggests: a board that washes out at a 4pm kickoff or lets moisture into a panel edge becomes a maintenance line item for the next decade.
We build our own scoreboard control software for football, so the display and the thing driving it come from the same place. On a Friday night that matters more than any spec: down and distance, play clock, quarter scoring, penalty banners, and touchdown videos are all operated from one panel, and the person operating it is often a student.
When something needs to change mid-season — a new sponsor loop, a roster update, different clock behavior — you are not filing a support ticket with a manufacturer three time zones away and waiting on a firmware release.
A video display creates inventory a static scoreboard cannot sell. Full-screen commercials between series, rotating banner positions, sponsored replays, and moments tied to what just happened on the field are all sellable, and they are sellable at a different rate than a vinyl sign on a fence.
Programs that treat the board as an asset and sell that inventory deliberately often cover a meaningful share of its cost. Lead time depends on panel availability and how much structural work your site needs.
